The Crang forest near the southeastern Buzau municipality, where the local authorities want to arrange the largest urban park in Europe, was transferred to the property of the local authorities through a recent government decision, and on Tuesday it was officially taken over by the municipality, mayor Constantin Toma announced.
He said in a post on his Facebook page that he had signed the protocol with the Forest Guard and Romsilva.
"Today, February 8, 2022, we signed the protocol with the Forest Guard and Romsilva, to take over in the public property of the Buzau municipality, of the Crang forest, in an area of 177.78 hectares, which is added to the 9.4 hectares existing around the lake. There, the dream of the mayor of Buzau, Nicu Constantinescu, who took over on May 1, 1881 the Crang forest by law and who respected 'the condition that forever, the Crangul to serve as a place of walking and embellishment of the city', is carried on," wrote Constantin Toma.
The intention of the local authorities is to regenerate the forest and turn it into the largest urban park in Europe.
"It is our obligation to regenerate this wonderful forest, to improve its biodiversity, so that, together with the other circular economy projects, we can turn Buzau city into one of the most sustainable cities in Romania," mayor Constantin Toma added, Agerpres.ro informs.
Buzau municipality was the owner of this forest since May 1, 1881 until June 11, 1948, and after nationalization, the forest was administered by the state, through Romsilva.
Almost five years ago, Constantin Toma requested the restitution of the Crang forest, and the Romanian Government approved in January this year its free transfer to the public property of the Buzau municipality. The forest is located in the extension of the park of about 10 hectares with the same name, Crang, which is the oldest and most famous park of the city.
