The Central Electoral Bureau (BEC) has rejected Călin Georgescu's candidacy for the 2025 presidential elections, citing the violation of fundamental principles of the electoral process and previous decisions of the Constitutional Court. The decision was taken in accordance with the legal and constitutional provisions governing the candidate selection process.

Reasons for the rejection

Călin Georgescu's candidacy was filed with the BEC on March 7, 2025, together with his electoral sign. However, the analysis of the candidacy file revealed that it did not comply with the constitutional and electoral requirements necessary to participate in the elections.

An essential element in the rejection of the candidacy is linked to the jurisprudence of the Romanian Constitutional Court. In its previous decisions, the Court has established that any candidate for the presidential elections must respect democratic principles and fulfill the conditions laid down by the Fundamental Law. More specifically, the Court ruled that a person who has behaved contrary to these principles cannot be considered eligible.

The BEC emphasized that the Constitutional Court's judgment No. 32 of 6 December 2024, which annulled the previous electoral process and ordered its resumption, is binding for all institutions involved in the organization of elections. According to this decision, Călin Georgescu was in "manifest contradiction with the essential values of the rule of law" by failing to comply with electoral rules in the previous process. Thus, the acceptance of his candidacy would have been contrary to the ruling of the Constitutional Court and would have affected the integrity of the elections.

BEC decision and the right to appeal

Following these findings, the BEC decided to reject the registration of Călin Georgescu's candidacy and electoral sign. The institution argued that in such situations not only the formal criteria are relevant, but also the fundamental aspects related to respect for democratic principles.

The decision can be challenged before the Constitutional Court within 24 hours of publication.
