Caretaker Prime Minister Catalin Predoiu on Saturday took to X to mark the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Schengen Agreement, noting that this agreement represents "a cornerstone of European unity", that also benefits Romania as of 2024.
"Today marks 40 years of the Schengen Agreement a cornerstone of European unity. Freedom of movement, shared security and economic growth define #Schengen40. Since 2024, Romania proudly shares these benefits with all Europeans," Predoiu wrote.
Under the Schengen Agreement signed on June 14, 1985 in a small Luxembourg town, Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands undertook to gradually abolish controls at their common borders and introduce free movement for all their citizens, goods and services.
Meanwhile, the Schengen has grown to include a total of 29 countries (as of mid-2024).
