The Chamber of Deputies approved in a plenary meeting on Wednesday a modification of the institution's regulations, stipulating that deputies who do not attend plenary sessions or committee meetings will be penalized with 5% of their gross allowance for each day of absence.
Tightening penalties for absentee lawmakers, who will now be fined 5% of their allowance for each day of absence, instead of 1% as it was initially, was also voted on Tuesday by the joint plenary of Parliament. This provision must also be regulated in the regulations of both Chambers to align with the Statutes of Deputies and Senators.
"Deputies who have not participated in at least one parliamentary activity held at the Chamber of Deputies' headquarters, during the approved programme and agenda for that day, and have not provided an explanation for their absence, will be considered unexcused absentees and will have 5% deducted from their gross allowance," the decision adopted by the Chamber's plenary on Wednesday reads.
