Chief of Defence Staff, General Gheorghita Vlad, participated in the NATO Military Committee meeting, which took place on Friday and Saturday in Riga, Latvia, which agenda focused primarily on the implementation of the decisions made at the Hague Summit and measures to continue strengthening the Alliance's collective deterrence and defence capabilities.
According to a press release the Ministry of National Defence (MApN) sent to AGERPRES on Sunday, the meeting was chaired by Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, Chairman of the NATO Military Committee. The event was also attended by General Alexus G. Grynkewich, Supreme Allied Commander Europe, and Admiral Pierre Vandier, Supreme Allied Commander Transformation.
On the sidelines of the event, Romania's Chief of Defence held bilateral meetings with his Spanish counterpart, Admiral Teodoro Lopez Calderon, and his American counterpart, General Dan Caine.
'The discussions focused on the importance of the new NATO operation 'Eastern Sentry', as part of the response measures to incidents in Allied airspace on the Eastern Flank, as well as the need to adapt the national legislative framework in order to create a solid basis for action in similar situations. In this context, the defence chiefs emphasised the importance of rapidly adapting capabilities by integrating emerging technologies and shortening the time needed to conduct operations,' the press release reads.
The NATO Military Committee meets biannually to discuss NATO missions, exercises, and capabilities, as well as other relevant topics.
