The European Commission was notified on June 30 last year about the works on the Giurgiu-Ruse bridge, because it is a cross-border bridge, so the general public could have been notified on this subject since then, but it is up to the national authorities how they organise their construction sites, said European Commissioner for Transport Adina Valean, at the European Commission's stocktaking conference on Tuesday.
"If the Commission was notified on June 30 last year - because we had people on site at the Giurgiu bridge, from the European Commission, who discussed with the authorities of Romania and Bulgaria alternative routes so that there would be no bottleneck due to the repair of this bridge, it was promised to put the ferry into use, it was promised to authorise transportation by ferry in 10 days, both by Romania and Bulgaria, just to have fluidity and to be sure that there are no bottlenecks at this border crossing - so, as we were notified, the general public could have been notified (...) it is up to the national authorities how they organiwe their construction sites," Valean said, when asked what she thinks about the way in which the authorities have acted and announced the works on the Giurgiu-Ruse Bridge and the Olt Valley.
Concerning the closure of traffic on the Olt Valley, the European commissioner said that a month of deforestation works is not much for a motorway, but it was desirable to use intelligent transportation systems, which are used in other countries for such works and which provide real-time information about traffic on alternative routes.
Adina Valean maintained that these projects of digitisation of information in transport and road transport continue to benefit from EU funding, but she did not know to what extent Romania had benefited from them.
The European commissioner for Transport stressed that it was known for a long time that work would be carried out on the Olt Valley and that the traffic halt should have been announced in advance.
