The message of the US Department of State regarding the Justice Laws should be fully read, head of the Special Parliamentary Committee on the Justice package Florin Iordache stated.

"That message should be entirely read. That message speaks about the laws proposed by the Government. As you have seen, we have a very wide debate and we are starting from some laws adopted 14 year ago and the entire judicial system of Romania demands us to intervene on these laws. If there is a single provision or in the message that was sent, than probably they will come up with other view points, if there is a single provision that breaches either the independence of Justice, or we are talking about the fight against corruption, I totally agree with this provision," Iordache stated on Tuesday in the beginning of the special committee meeting.

He brought to mind that MPs of the committee have talked so far only about matters that aim the separation of magistrates' career, without any political interference in the act of appointment.

"I have talked about strengthening the independence of both judges and prosecutors, without any political interference, in the act of appointment, in the act of dismissal and in the magistrates' career, and I hope to get to the magistrate accountability law. From my point of view, there is no reason to stop Parliament from debating. I want to remind you that these laws were adopted in 2005, with the Government taking on this accountability. Therefore, between the Government accountability, where there is no debate and a large debate with all those interested at the table, I think that the second way of working is preferable," Iordache also stated.

When asked why the US Department of State reacted, Iordache revealed that he doesn't know and added that the MPs of the special committee took into account all the observations made by the judicial system.

When asked if he will continue the debates on these laws and not cease them, as it was requested in the beginning of the committee meeting by deputy of the Save Romania Union (USR) Stelian Ion, who requested the committee to suspend its activity and start everything from scratch, through other procedures, Iordache showed that this debate will continue.

"We will undoubtedly continue this debate and further have in mind all the positions voiced by the judicial environment that is invited," he stated.

The special committee president mentioned that, so far, he didn't have any discussions with the Social-Democrat leadership following the message that came from the US.
