In Covasna County, the technical inspection of hydrotechnical constructions serving as flood defenses has begun, as part of a national action coordinated by the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests, Prefect Raduly Istvan announced on Tuesday.
According to him, the controls aim to identify vulnerable areas, where bank erosion or dam degradation endanger homes, infrastructure facilities and community safety.
"We know that we have critical areas, I'm telling you from the very beginning. I'm referring here to those areas where the erosion of the river, of the banks, is very active and advanced, which endangers the safety of the localities, as is the case, for example, in Lunca Marcusului and Bacel, where floods occurred in May. In Borosneu Mare it's a different case - there it was about unclogging the Zagon stream", declared the prefect, during a press conference.
The checks also include assessing the condition of old hydrotechnical equipment, such as locks, but also of the operational emergency intervention capacities, namely the stocks of essential materials, such as bags, sand, equipment, fuel and available human resources.
"An additional element is the verification of the necessary materials in case we have to intervene urgently to defend property and human lives. I am referring here to sand, bags, etc. Because if we have sand, we don't have bags, if we have bags, we don't have sand, if we have everything, we don't have equipment, if we have equipment, we don't have diesel, if we have everything, we don't have people. All of this will be verified (...) We must do everything possible to limit the danger of flooding as much as possible," the prefect also said.
He emphasized that Romania has approximately 10,000 kilometers of hydrotechnical works, of which approximately 450 kilometers are in Covasna County.
In May, several localities in Covasna County faced floods following heavy rains, affecting over 200 households and approximately 1,300 hectares of agricultural land.
Following these events, local authorities submitted short, medium and long-term investment requests to the Government, aiming to strengthen dams, unclog watercourses and install fixed pumping stations in high-risk areas.
