The title of Honorary Citizen of the Capital will be awarded to conductor Cristian Macelaru, according to a draft resolution listed on the agenda of Tuesday's meeting of the General Council of Bucharest.

The distinction will be granted for his "outstanding merits in the area of orchestral conducting and in promoting Romanian musical culture" at both national and international levels.

"Mr. Cristian Macelaru, an internationally renowned conductor, Music Director of the Orchestre National de France and Artistic Director of the George Enescu Festival, is one of the most prestigious figures in contemporary cultural life. Through his remarkable career, his collaborations with world-class orchestras, and his projects carried out in Bucharest, he has contributed to enhancing the international prestige of the Capital and promoting Romanian cultural identity," reads the statement of approval, signed by interim mayor Stelian Bujduveanu.

According to the supporting report, Cristian Macelaru is originally from Timisoara, "trained in Romania and professionally refined in the USA." He pursued advanced studies at Rice University in Houston and was awarded the Solti Conducting Award in 2014, becoming the first Romanian musician to receive this honour.

Since then, he has been invited to collaborate with world-renowned orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Staatskapelle Dresden, and the Orchestre National de France.
