The suffering and sacrifice of our predecessors unite us today in kindness, hope, compassion and tolerance, Romanian Crown Custodian Margareta says in a message sent on Sunday at the celebration of one century since the end of WWI.

"I am addressing each Romanian in part, wherever he or she may be, in the country or worldwide. Today, on the 11th day of the 11th month of the year, at 11 o'clock, the entire humanity commemorates one century since the ending of the Great War, a tragedy that claimed over nine million human lives, all over the globe. Romania lost one hundred years ago more than half a million people of all ages, of a population totalling 7.5 million inhabitants. I am calling you to live this morning a moment of communion, in the heart and mind. Each of our families had a victim in the terrible years of WWI. Each of our families was in mourning one century ago. The suffering and sacrifice of our predecessors unite us today in kindness, hope, compassion and tolerance. And in pride. As any profound suffering, the tragedy of those one hundred years go has in itself something uplifting and courage giving," Her Majesty Margareta says, according to a Royal House release.

The Crown Custodian brings to mind that this is also "a moment of silence in the memory of those who, for the Nation and Crown, sacrificed everything."

"In spite of the superiority of the hostile forces, Romanians resisted and reached, in only two years, the supreme ideal, strengthening their identity and future. The fidelity with which Romanians gathered round the Crown was the foundation of the political and diplomatic battle of statesmen for the acknowledgment of the union and for consolidating the Romanian influence in Europe. It is often said that Romanians were lucky to have a Queen such as Maria and a loyal sovereign such as Ferdinand I, by great grandparents. We may also say the contrary: Ferdinand I and Maria were lucky to have such a people. So help us God!," the Crown Custodian concludes her message.
