Current account deficit down by 24%, to 16.051 billion euros, nine months into 2023
The current account of the balance of payments registered, in the first nine months, a deficit of 16.051 billion euros, 24% lower than the 21.147 billion euros from the similar period last year, the National Bank of Romania informs on Monday.
In its structure, the balance of goods recorded a smaller deficit by 3.223 billion euros, the balance of services recorded a larger surplus by 1.577 billion euros, the balance of primary incomes recorded a smaller deficit by 258 million euros, and the balance of secondary incomes recorded a surplus higher by 38 million euros.
Between January and September 2023, the total external debt increased by 17.376 billion euros. In the structure, long-term external debt amounted to 116.128 billion euros on September 30, 2023 (72% of the total external debt), increasing by 17.7% compared to December 31, 2022; the short-term external debt recorded on September 30, 2023 the level of 45.134 billion euros (28% of the total external debt), down by 0.3% compared to December 31, 2022.
The long-term external debt service rate was 17% in the period January - September 2023, compared to 17.9% in 2022. The degree of coverage of imports of goods and services on September 30, 2023 was 5.6 months, compared with 4.4 months on December 31, 2022.
The degree of coverage of the short-term external debt, calculated at the residual value, with foreign exchange reserves at the NBR on September 30, 2023 was 105.4%, compared to 82.4% on December 31, 2022.
