The Custodian of the Romanian Crown, Her Majesty Margareta, and His Royal Highness Prince Radu participated, on Thursday, in the anniversary ceremony of the "Nicolae Testemitanu" State University of Medicine and Pharmacy of the Republic of Moldova, organised on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the higher education institution.
The event was also attended by the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, numerous members of the Government, diplomats, as well as rectors from Romania, Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova.
"We are here today at a moment of profound significance for the entire academic and medical community, the 80th anniversary of the Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy of the Republic of Moldova, 80 years in which we have trained dozens of generations of doctors, built scientific schools, served the health and life of people. This event records eight decades of prodigious activity in higher medical education," emphasised the rector of the State University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Emil Ceban.
In her turn, the President of the Republic of Moldova emphasised the role of doctors in the communities to which they belong and appreciated that "citizens' trust in the state depends, to a large extent, on their trust in the capacity of the medical system to save lives."
"People look at medicine with great hope. They want a medical system that treats them with dignity and professionalism. Citizens' trust in the state depends, to a large extent, on their trust in the medical system's ability to save lives, their own lives, the lives of their loved ones. Every doctor, regardless of whether they practice in Chisinau, Balti or a village, represents a support and a landmark for their community. Therefore, the university not only trains specialists, but also strengthens the trust between people and the state," said Maia Sandu.
In his speech, Prince Radu of Romania evoked the past of the State University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Chisinau and emphasised the role of the royal family in supporting education in both Romania and the Republic of Moldova.
"Your birth 80 years ago took place in a tormented time, in a cruel time, in a time of destruction, humiliation and reconstruction. Everything was done with hope, with patriotism and with the sense of duty that, in its depth, our people have. But the 80 years are also a fruit of the entire development of our modern history, which is 160 years old. Sealed in the mid-19th century by the founding king of modern times, Carol I, and the great scholar Spiru Haret, who has a street in your city that bears his name, they laid the foundations of an education that, directly or indirectly, from generation to generation, from time to time, passing over ordinances, passing over governments, carried forward this delightful and admirable spirit of combined patriotism with intelligence, with knowledge, with humility, with modesty and with balance," said Prince Radu.
