President Klaus Iohannis, Senate president Nicolae Ciuca, prime minister Marcel Ciolacu congratulated David Popovici for his gold medal on Monday night at the Olympic Games in Paris.

"David Popovici brings the first Olympic medal for Romania at the Olympic Games in Paris! Congratulations, David, for this extraordinary performance! Go, #TeamRomania!" Iohannis wrote on Facebook.

"Congratulations, David Popovici! Tonight you wrote history for Romania with the gold in the 200 m freestyle. You made us, once again, proud of you and proud to be Romanians. We bow to your performance!" wrote Nicolae Ciuca on his Facebook page.

"Sensational! David Popovici - Olympic Gold! On National Anthem Day, the most beautiful gift a Romanian can give to everyone. It's the credit of you and your team for all the effort. Well done, David!" wrote Marcel Ciolacu on his Facebook page.

The Romanian swimmer David Popovici won, on Monday, the gold medal in the 200 meter freestyle at the Olympic Games in Paris, after a race with a dramatic ending.
