Olympic, world and European swimming champion David Popovici raised 173,000 euros through the "Ambassador for Home" campaign run by charity foundation Hope and Homes for Children Romania by raffling off the gear he wore at the Paris 2024 Olympics award ceremony, a release informs.

"Hope and Homes for Children Romania marked a historic moment in 2024: the largest pay-by-card retail donation campaign that spanned 40 days - 'Ambassador for Home'. When we build a house, we build a human being," the release notes, emphasizing that five high-profile public figures were at the center of the campaign - swimmer David Popovici, TV anchor Amalia Enache, violinist Alexandru Tomescu, television and radio producer Mihai Morar and actor Marius Manole. "In a symbolic, profound and moving gesture, David Popovici - double world and Olympic swimming champion - donated the outfit he wore at the awards ceremony at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, thus sending out a message of support and a call for solidarity. In just 10 days, David mobilized over 8,000 donors and raised 173,000 euros," the release states, adding that the five campaign ambassadors managed to mobilize a total of 14,600 people and 28 companies, raising a combined of over 590,000 euros for family-deprived children.

With this money, Hope and Homes for Children started in November 2024 the construction of a family home in Bucharest Sector 5 for 11 children with special needs, who will thus have not only a roof over their heads, but a living environment adjusted to their needs where to grow, learn and develop their potential. This home marks the shutting down of the last foster center in Bucharest Sector 5, the symbol of an outdated system which must make way for modern and effective child protection solutions.

In recent years, 20-year-old David Popovici has been a constant participant in various charitable campaigns, donating among others one of the gold medals he won at the 2022 World Swimming Championships.
