The Craiova Local Council voted in Thursday's meeting to allocate the sum of 450,000 RON in order to organize the Davis Cup in Craiova, between September 8-15 this year.
The amount was allocated at the request of the Romanian Tennis Federation, the Davis Cup being the annual competition with the largest number of participating countries, with a history of over 120 years.
According to the programme of the event, between September 9 and 12, there will be training sessions for the Romanian team and the Chinese team, the drawing and the opening ceremony will take place on Friday, from 12:30 p.m.
"The first edition took place in 1900, as a match between Great Britain and the USA, at the initiative of Dwight F. Davis, a student of Harvard University and a passionate tennis player, and since then it has expanded throughout the world. Currently, the competition reunites teams from more than 130 countries, being divided into different levels and value groups, making the Davis Cup the most important inter-country team competition. The current format of the competition includes singles and doubles matches, played throughout several rounds and culminating in the world finals. Romania debuted in the Davis Cup in 1922. The Romanian national team played in the World Group for 14 years. The best results of the tricolors were the finals in 1969, 1971 and 1972", mentions the decision report of the Craiova Local Council.
According to the quoted source, for the 2024 edition, the Romanian national tennis team will meet China in the Davis Cup, the match to be held in Craiova, between September 13-14, 2024.
"It would be the first time that the Municipality of Craiova organizes a tennis competition at the highest level, and this event has a special impact on the promotion of sport and the municipality of Craiova at the international level. The organization of a competition of such scope in Craiova will highlight the capacity the municipality to host this type of world-class competition. In addition, young athletes in the area will have the chance to be inspired directly by the best players, which can stimulate their interest in tennis, all the more Craiova has one of the most developed and modern sports infrastructures in the country. The event not only promotes tennis, but also highlights the facilities and potential of the city of Craiova on the national and international stage," the said decision also reads.
