Chess player Bogdan Deac will represent Romania at the 2024 edition of Superbet Chess Classic Romania, the second leg of the international Grand Chess Tour (GCT) circuit, that will start at the end of June at the Grand Hotel in Bucharest.
Ten of the currently best chess players participate in the tournament in Bucharest: Bogdan Daniel Deac (42nd in the world, number 2 in Romania), American Fabiano Caruana (2nd in the world, winner of the Grand Chess Tour 2023), Russian Ian Nepomniachtch (4th in the world), Uzbek Nodirbek Abdusatorov (5th in the world), Indian Gukesh Dommaraju (6th in the world), American Wesley So (world number 9), Indian Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu (world number 14), Dutch Anish Giri (world number 15), French Alireza Firouzja (world number 16, winner of the Grand Chess Tour 2022) and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (world number 20).
This year's classical chess competition will take place at the Grand Hotel Bucharest between June 25 and July 6. The players will play in a closed chess tournament system, and the winner will be decided by cumulative scoring.
For the GCT circuit - 2024 edition, the multi-time world champion Garry Kasparov, also founder of the tournament, will return to Romania.
The prize pool of the Bucharest leg is USD 350,000. The entire prize pool is USD 1.5 million, of which USD 350,000 for the classical chess stage and USD 175,000 for each rapid chess and blitz stage. At the same time, for the 2024 edition there is a bonus prize fund of USD275,000, which will be awarded to the top finishers at the end of the entire tournament.
