The Romanian artillery distinguished, since its establishment, through heroic sacrifices for defending the national identity, reads a message of National Defence Minister Mihai Fifor delivered on the celebration of 175 years since the foundation of the Artillery service branch in Romania's Army.

"Romania's Army celebrates on 10 November 2018, the Artillery Day, thus marking 175 years since the first artillery battery was established in Wallachia, through Ruler's Command No.185 on 10 November 1843. Throughout its existence, the Romanian artillery distinguished, not rarely, through heroic sacrifices and valiant acts for defending the national identity. On the battlefield, the artillery soldiers defended the Romanian soil with courage and the sense of debt was a source of strength in the most difficult moments. Honor, discipline, boldness have always been values that define the Romanian artillery servicemen. On this anniversary day, we bow before the past having the obligation to pay homage to the artillery heroes who dedicated their lives to serving the motherland, for fulfilling the liberty and independence ideals of the Romanian people," Mihai Fifor underscored in his message.

He added that the artillery represents a basic element in the architecture of any modern army and Romania's accession to NATO also brought major opportunities for the artillery soldiers to modernize their fighting techniques and operating procedures, based on the principle of interoperability with the allied forces.

"The strategic acquisition programmes planned and carried out by the National Defence Ministry also took into account the development needs of this service branch. Thus, worthy to be brought to mind here is the 'High Mobility Artillery Rocket System' (HIMARS), which aim to earmark three such systems for accomplishing 'the Indirect Fire Support Capability.' Through this programme, complementary to those already completed or in the final stages of implementation, the artillery service branch will ensure its full compatibility with similar structures inside NATO. At the same time, this capability will significantly increase the role of the Land Forces in defending both the national soil and that of the North Atlantic Alliance. (...) You distinguish yourselves dear artillery servicemen, through very good results and efficiency in the activities that you conducted, and all this represents the fruit of your professionalism and commitment both in missions on the country's territory and abroad," Minister Fifor added.
