National Defence Minister Gabriel Les on Wednesday carried out a bilateral meeting with his Canadian counterpart Harjit Singh Sajjan, on the occasion of the informal meeting of defence ministers of NATO member countries, which took place in Brussels, a National Defence Ministry (MApN) release informs.
According to the quoted source, "the Romanian official commended the substantial and constant contribution of Canada to implementing the consolidation measures on the allied Eastern flank, proven through Canada's participation in strengthened air policing missions on the soil of our country."
"Furthermore, Minister Les thanked for the commitments that Canada took on this year, in view of carrying out such missions. Minister Les also emphasised the special importance of the transatlantic relationship for the security of Europe, taking into account the current security challenges in the Black Sea region," the release mentions.
The two officials also discussed the cooperation within the United Nations Organisation (UN), the main topic being the military mission which Romania will conduct in the autumn of this year in Mali.
"The two officials tackled the topic of Romania's contribution to MINUSMA mission in Mali [United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali], as of October 2019. Thus, taking into account that Romania will succeed Canada in fulfilling the mission, the two ministers discussed general aspects that such an operational contribution implies, as well as the support which the Canadian partner could offer, through its expertise, in preparing our country's participation in this mission," the MApN release said.
On Wednesday also, the National Defence Minister met in Brussels with Georgia's Defence Minister Levan Izoria, whom he tackled with topics of shared interest regarding bilateral military cooperation, the recent developments in the security situation in the Black Sea region, as well as NATO-Georgia cooperation.
Gabriel Les underscored that our country will continue to actively support the reform and modernisation process of the Georgian armed forces, in order to strengthen the defence system and increase interoperability with allied states.
Moreover, the Romanian Minister commended Georgia's consistent operational participation in the Alliance's efforts to strengthen regional and international security and stability, especially in regards to the Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan.
