The electronic ID card is a very good thing and should be integrated with as many entities as possible, Minister of Economy, Digitalization, Entrepreneurship and Tourism Radu Miruta said on Friday.
"The electronic ID card is a very good thing that is happening and should be integrated with as many entities as possible. Initially, the cards were delivered before readers capable of extracting all the information were available, so people also had to carry a separate document proving their address. But, I understand that this issue, if not already being resolved, has now been addressed," the minister said regarding the effective implementation of the electronic ID system.
In recent months, tens of thousands of people who obtained the electronic ID card also had to request a separate certificate of residence to prove their address when interacting with institutions, utility offices or pharmacies.
At the end of October, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) Monica Dajbog said that over 780,000 citizens already have an electronic ID card and that they are not missing from any state information system, contrary to some comments in the public space.
"Over 780,000 citizens already have an electronic ID card and benefit from certain facilities it provides in interactions with public institutions and private operators. These citizens are not missing from any state information system, as has been incorrectly claimed in the public space. All Romanian citizens' identification data are securely managed in the national civil registry without interruptions, losses or malfunctions," Dajbog told a press conference at the MAI headquarters.
She mentioned that the new ID cards are legal documents, valid in Romania and across the European Union, and that their holders enjoy all rights provided by law.
The MAI official added that the electronic document was developed according to international standards, which can be easily accessed by any public or private operator interested in developing electronic services or acquiring card readers.
She underscored that in most interactions - with public or private operators - it is sufficient to prove the holder's identity simply by presenting the electronic ID card, without needing to access the card's electronic storage via a reader.
