All the changes developed correspond to European practices, Education Minister Daniel David said on Thursday.
"I had talks with the trade unions (...). As I said, I understand them, as well as the students who started the protests. (...) All the changes we have made correspond to European practices and correspond to the financial conditions you have at the moment. We can no longer afford the system we have now. We can no longer afford the anomalies that we have and my role as minister is to normalize these anomalies so that we can then provide good support to students and teachers who are giving their time," the minister said during a briefing at the Government.
He referred to the fact that money has been invested in "bad mechanisms, anomalies that are not healthy".
"My stake is that by 2030 we will no longer be spending 15% of the consolidated general budget on education," David said.
Daniel David said that teachers who work more than eight hours are classified as "extra work".
"At the moment, we are paid for eight hours a day, 40 hours a week, and if we look at the teaching load, we actually have 3.6 hours out of those eight hours, so there is a difference of 5.4 hours," he added.
Moreover, David said that people who work overtime "are paid for eight hours".
"They are not paid for 3.6, they are paid for 40 hours, not for eight," the minister added.
