Minister of Education and Research Daniel David met during his visit to the US with representatives of the Romanian United Foundation, a Chicago-based organization of the Romanian diaspora that is an active presence in over 50 countries and 280 cities.
"Following recent discussions and meetings with representatives of the Romanian United Foundation (...) we are looking at the possibility of a partnership to support projects in the fields of education, research and innovation, with an impact both in Romania and in the diaspora. This initiative will be designed in complementarity with the programs already carried out by the Department for Romanians Everywhere and other institutions involved, so that the added value is truly cumulative," the minister wrote on Facebook on Friday.
One of the projects proposed is a large-scale initiative dedicated to connecting Romanian researchers and professionals overseas with institutions and companies in Romania, as well as programs for youth aimed at strengthening cultural and linguistic ties through educational experiences carried out in the country.
Minister David also visited a Romanian church in North Carolina.
"If in Washington I wanted to see schools where children of diaspora Romanians study, in North Carolina I visited an Orthodox mission of a Romanian diaspora community in the Durham area. (...) Again, we discussed how we can help the Romanian community here in terms of education - for instance, as I learned that the parish priest's wife wants to develop non-formal educational activities around the church, we explored whether/how the Edulib online library would be useful to Romanian children and we thus encouraged them to access the support offered by the Department for Romanians Everywhere," Daniel David wrote.
He offered the church two anthology volumes after publications from the 18th century which present information on the establishment of the first institution in the country carrying the name 'University' (1725) and on the first documented relevant doctor's degree on the territory of current Romania (1715).
