Minister of Education and Research Daniel David said on Wednesday that it is "almost impossible" to repeal the tax and budgetary measures taken in the education system in July, and the resignation of the government "is not possible."

"Wages and scholarships can be covered until the end of the year. I have listened to what the unions are asking for - repealing the measures. It is almost impossible, given that the law passed in July. Already, the entire school year structure has been organised. The school year has already started, because it started on September 1. It's almost impossible. I don't think the government's resignation is possible. My resignation... If my resignation would solve these measures or cancel these measures, I would gladly give myself this resignation," David told Digi 24 private broadcaster, agerpres reports.

He added that if these measures were not taken, education would have been frozen in terms of funding.

"I said that the measures were taken in a coalition, in accordance with a government agenda, in a fiscal-budgetary law. (...) In this implementation process, we have always invited the trade unions, the other players to participate in the implementation area. Some got involved, others didn't. The idea is this: if you didn't take these measures, education would have been frozen in terms of funding, wages and scholarships," said David.

He added that one of his grievances is that from a minister of reform he had to become "a minister of austerity."

"The dissatisfaction is also on my part, and I also have different dissatisfactions, including the fact that from a minister of reform I had to become a minister of austerity to save wages and scholarships, that this is not what we intended. (...) When I took over the second term, I did not expect the situation to be so serious and no one knew it was so serious until Prime Minister Bolojan presented those data and results that terrified everyone."

David also said that the education system "is not doing well in general" and stressed that there is no room for other crisis measures in education.

"The system is not working well in general. It has lights and shadows. (...) In education there is no room for other crisis measures," said David.
