Romanian Academy to elect its chairman

Deputy chairs of the Romanian Academy Marius Andruh and Mircea Dumitru are running today for the position of chairman of this forum.

Incumbent Chairman Ioan-Aurel Pop has told AGERPRES that he will no longer run for any position in the academy's leadership.

The election is scheduled for today Tuesday during a General Assembly meeting, according to the Statutes of the Academy, which provides for the organisation of the election every four years in the first week of April.

The two candidates will have 10 minutes to present their management plan in front of the General Assembly.

Under the statutes, the chairman of the academy is elected either by two-thirds of the votes in the first round, or by a simple majority in a second round.

The chairman-elect takes office 15 days of the election.

On April 29, the academy will elect its deputy chairs and a secretary general.

Marius Andruh was born on July 15, 1954 at Smeeni, Buzau County to a family of teachers. A 1979 valedictorian of the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Bucharest, the Inorganic Chemistry section. I

In 1988 he earned the title of doctor in chemistry. Postdoctoral specialisations in Paris (1991) and in Gottingen, as a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (1992-1993).

A professor at the Department of Inorganic Chemistry of the Faculty of Chemistry, University of Bucharest since 1984 and professor emeritus since 2019, he chaired the department in 2003- 2019 .

In 2021 he became director of the C.D. Nenitescu Institute of Organic and Supramolecular Chemistry of the Romanian Academy.

Between 1994 and 1996 he was an associate professor at the Université du Quebec Montreal.

He was a visiting professors at universities in Europe and South America: University of Bordeaux and Institut Universitaire de France (1998), University of Göttingen (2001), University of Brno (2001), University of Angers (2003, 2004, 2009), Pierre et Marie Curie University of Paris (2005), University of Jena (2006), University of Manchester (2006), Paul Sabatier University, Toulouse (2007), Louis Pasteur University of Strasbourg (2007, 2009), University of Valencia (2010); Federal University Fluminense Niteroi/Rio de Janeiro, (2012, 2013, 2014), University of Bordeaux (Centre de Recherche Paul Pascal, 2014).

He is currently chairman of the Central Commission of the National Chemistry Olympiad and coordinator of the Olympic team. He was elected deputy chair of the Romanian Academy in 2022.

His research areas comprise metallosupramolecular chemistry; crystal engineering; molecular magnetism; heteropolynuclear complex combinations; molecular and supramolecular systems with three different spin carriers, and luminescent molecular materials.

Born in Bucharest on July 14, 1960, Mircea Dumitru is an alumn of the Faculty of History and Philosophy of the University of Bucharest.

In 1998 he earned the title of doctor of the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Bucharest, with a thesis in the field of philosophy of language. In the same year he also earned a Ph.D. title at Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, in modal logic and philosophy of mathematics.

Between 2011 and 2014 he was chairman of the European Society of Analytic Philosophy, and between 2017 and 2020 he chaired the International Institute of Philosophy. He held the position of chairman of the Balkan Universities Association from 2019 to 2020.

He was Romania's minister of education and scientific research from July 2016 to January 2017.

His research fields are philosophical logic, metaphysics, philosophy of language.

He has been deputy chair of the Romanian Academy since 2022, chairman of the Department of Philosophy, Theology, Psychology and Pedagogy (since 2021), director of the Constantin Radulescu-Motru Institute of Philosophy and Psychology of the Romanian Academy (2021-2025).
