Education Minister Daniel David said on Thursday that he does not want children to have the idea that they study for grades or to get a scholarship, and said that education is mandatory.

"Some children, even colleagues or people I know, the children of my friends, told me that they were angry with me, with the prime minister, with the president, with the system in general, that they studied and wanted to get a scholarship in the fall. And I tell everyone what I told them and those I know. As Minister of Education and Research, I don't want the idea to appear in children's minds that they study for grades, to get a scholarship. Education is mandatory. I do everything in my power to make them come to school with pleasure, to see school as a path to social success, but I don't want them to see school as a way at this stage to study for a grade that will bring them some money," said David, in a press conference at Victoria Palace.

He mentioned that this is how things worked three or four years ago.

"So I ask all students to understand that those who need social help will be helped. Merit will be defined as merit, and those who are very successful in national and international olympiads will receive more as a prize than they have received so far," he concluded.
