Eight out of ten households in Romania that are connected to the gas grid have an individual gas-fired heating system, but at the same time around 40% of these units are older-generation models, according to a study conducted by E.ON Energie Romania and published on Tuesday.

According to the cited source, individual gas boilers remain the main source of home heating nationwide, being used in roughly 51% of households, up 3% compared with the same period in 2024.

Among households connected to the natural gas network, the share of those using gas boilers has reached 81%. In second place are homes heated with wood-fired stoves (29%) - down by around 3 percentage points year-on-year - followed by those equipped with wood- or pellet-fired boilers (15%), a share similar to last year.

In urban areas, individual gas-fired boilers - whether condensing or conventional - continue to dominate, being used by 68% of residents, while only 15% rely on district heating.

By contrast, in rural areas, wood heating remains predominant: 51% of households use wood-burning stoves, and 28% use wood- or pellet-fired boilers.

"However, 40% of the gas boilers currently in use are conventional models, which means higher consumption and higher bills for the same level of comfort compared with a modern condensing boiler. An old boiler consumes, on average, 12,000 kWh per year, resulting in an annual bill of 3,720 lei. A modern condensing boiler, with an efficiency of 108%, can reduce consumption by up to 30%, or 3,600 kWh per year, saving a household around 1,116 lei annually," the company's specialists explained.

E.ON estimates that replacing all of the roughly 800,000 conventional, non-condensing boilers currently in use could generate nationwide savings of over 890 million lei per year — funds that could, for example, be redirected to various energy-efficiency projects.

The specialised study was conducted in the third quarter of this year on a sample of approximately 3,000 individuals aged over 18, using the CATI (Computer-Assisted Telephone Interviews) method. The maximum margin of error is +/- 3.1%, at a 95% confidence level.

E.ON Energie Romania, a member of Germany's E.ON Group, is an integrated supplier of natural gas, electricity and energy solutions, serving around 3.5 million customers — residential, corporate and municipal.

Since entering the local market, the company has invested around 2.4 billion euros, mainly in network modernisation. It has also paid 3.8 billion euros in contributions to the state and local budgets.
