Electric car registrations drop 46pct in June

New car registrations in Romania increased 61.7% in June this year compared to the same period in 2023, while "green" cars registered a growth of 27.4% and a market share of 20.4%, but 100% electric cars fell steeply, 46%, according to data from the Association of Automobile Manufacturers and Importers (APIA), presented on Monday at a press conference.

According to the source, after the important evolution of the previous months, June 2024 comes with a 63.2% increase in new car registrations, compared to the similar month of the previous year, respectively 38% compared to May 2024.

In terms of market share, the SUV segment is in first position with a share of 51.3% (up 93.7%), followed by the C-Class - with a share of 28% (+52.3%) and the B-Class - with a share of 14.9% (+48.3%).

According to the fuel type of cars registered in June this year, gasoline plus mild hybrid gasoline engines registered an increase of 71.2% compared to the similar period in 2023 and thus reach a share of 66.9%.

The segment of cars equipped with diesel engines plus mild hybrid diesel engines is up 88.4% and has a 12.7% share of the total.

On the other hand, "electrified" cars, that is electric cars (100% and plug-in hybrids) and full hybrids (which also have electric propulsion without external charging) have a market share of 20.4% in the sixth month of 2024, which is 7.7 percentage points higher than the share of diesel engines.

Fully-electric cars also hold a 4% share of the market in June 2024, up from 12% in June 2023, while plug-in hybid cars have reached a 2.8% market share, up from 3.9% last June.

In June 2024, the top three best-selling fully electric cars are: Dacia Spring - with 242 units and a drop of 66.2% from the same period last year, Tesla Model 3 (56 units, -33.3%) and Hyundai Kona (50 units).

In Plug-in cars, the top three models sold in the period under review are Toyota RAV4 - with 64 units and an increase of 33.3%, followed by Ford Kuga (63 units, +10.5%) and Mercedes Benz GLC (38 units, +40.7%).

Hybrid cars, without recharging from external sources, have the Toyota Corolla on first place - with 532 units, up 147% compared to June 2023. Toyota Yaris Cross - with 332 units and an increase of 78.5%, and Toyota Rav4 (313 units, +133%).

In the case of light commercial vehicles and minibuses, they show an increase of 119% in June 2024 compared to June 2023, of which light commercial vehicles without minibuses a jump of 118%.

At the same time, sales of heavy commercial vehicles and buses are down 1.5% year-on-year. Within this range, heavy commercial vehicles (over 3.5 tons plus tractors), excluding buses, are up 2.2%, while heavy commercial vehicles over 16 tons plus tractors are up 1.2%.
