The Embassy of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta in Romania announced on Monday that it had not issued any document in the name of Calin Georgescu.
This clarification follows the discovery, during searches conducted on Monday by DIICOT at Georgescu's home in Mogosoaia, of a "diplomatic" ID card bearing his name, apparently issued by the Order of the Knights of Malta.
"Regarding recent media reports concerning the discovery of a diplomatic ID card presumed to have been issued by the Sovereign Military Order of Malta to a specific individual, we wish to state the following: We confirm that the person in question is not a member of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and that we have never issued such a document. As correctly noted in the press, there are several false orders in Romania (so-called 'imitation orders') that have at times misused our symbols," representatives of the Order stated in a press release.
A "diplomatic" ID card in the name of Calin Georgescu, apparently issued by the Order of the Knights of Malta, was found by investigators at his villa in Mogosoaia, judicial sources told AGERPRES.
The "ID card" is titled "DIPLOMATIC ID" - Order of Malta, Sovereign Order Hospitalliers of Saint John of Jerusalem; it bears the name of "Senator" Calin Georgescu and includes his photograph.
