Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja declared on Monday, on the signing of the Romania-Serbia gas interconnector memorandum, that Romania positions itself as a regional leader in the energy sector and as a provider of geopolitical stability.

"It is key for energy to seamlessly flow between our countries, which would ensure two major conditions: a real, competitive market that sets the correct price for consumers; and energy security, keeping energy systems out of the islanding state, and the diversification of supply sources, positioning Romania as a regional leader in the energy sector and as a provider of geopolitical stability. These combined elements, as well as investment in infrastructure itself, generate confidence and economic growth, jobs and the development of the entire region," Burduja said.

He specified that Romania asserts its status as a regional energy leader by making its resources and experts available to neighboring countries.

Asked if Romania could export natural gas, the energy official said that this very much depends on commercial conditions.

"It is important for us to have as many such interconnections as possible in order to benefit from the best prices for Romanian gas. Our priority as a government is to use this gas in Romania to produce electricity, and we have somewhere around 3,000 MW in the works for gas-fired power facilities, so to add value to gas through electricity or, even better, in chemical fertilizer plants or medicine factories. What remains will be available for export, after the Romanian state expresses a pre-emption right, so it is important for us to have as many outlet markets available as possible, in order to make the most of the price for this gas," the energy minister explained.

Minister Sebastian Burduja and Serbian Mining and Energy Minister Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic signed on Monday at the Iron Gates I a Memorandum of Understanding on the Romania - Serbia Gas Interconnector Construction Project
