An exhibition including 34 engravings created by American artists was mounted on Thursday at the National Museum of Maps and Old Book in Bucharest, in the presence of the U. S. ambassador to Romania, Hans Klemm.

The show curated by Silvia Suciu and Barbara Sussman is part of a Romanian-American cultural exchange. As a result, a part of the said cultural exchange is the engraving show at Blue Hill Art & Cultural Center (open 11 May through 11 November) of the following Romanian artists: Aurel Bulacu, Tudor Campean, Emilia Kiss, Nemeth Attila, Rada Nita, Romeo Radulescu, Florin Stoiciu and Ion Titoiu.

Hans Klemm emphasised that his support to this event is "moral": I have to confess that my embassy and I are not involved in this exhibition, but, morally speaking, we support this event as much as we could. He added that the U. S. Embassy in Bucharest has a few programmes that allow the cultural exchanges between the American and the Romanian artists. I'm inspired to learn that this event is happening with no official backing, he stressed, reminding of the Romanian artists who, in their turn, are exhibiting in New York.

Klemm talked about a great name of the Romanian culture, Brancusi who, says he, is a great example of Romanian artist who presented to the American public the beauty created in Romania and in Europe.

The director of the museum, Cristina Toma said that the exhibition mounted Thursday is an accomplishment.

"I have projected that the first exhibit of international contemporary art be sometime in the following years and not this year," she said.

The show was carried out with support from the Blue Hill Art & Cultural Center, and the 11 American artists who are displaying their work in Bucharest are James Reed, Alexandra Eckhardt, Joel Beckwith, Ann Chernow, Andre Junget, Ben Ferguson, Dale Bradley, Joanna Dickey, Lyell Castonguay, Nomi Silverman, Andrew Murdoch.

The American artists' works reveal to the Romanian public various engraving techniques, such as xylography, lithography and aquaforte.

The exhibition could be visited until 3 September.
