The National Defense Ministry's General Directorate for Armaments, through National Corporation Romtehnica SA, and Israel's defense tech company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd signed on July 18 the framework agreement for the acquisition of SHORAD-VSHORAD anti-aircraft systems, a deal worth over EUR 2 billion, the National Defense Ministry said in a release.
The framework agreement provides for the signing of three subsequent contracts for the purchase of six integrated SHORAD-VSHORAD anti-aircraft systems, of a training and education system, a simulation system for the verification and assessment of VSHORAD operators, six SHORAD and six VSHORAD systems, including ammunition, training and logistical support.
The contracts amounts to RON 10.33 billion VAT excluded, i.e. approximately EUR 2.038 billion VAT excluded.
The framework agreement spans 7 years, with the first two VSHORAD systems to be delivered within 3 years of the signing of the first subsequent contract.
The "SHORAD-VSHORAD Integrated Weapon System" acquisition program is intended to provide the Romanian Army with advanced anti-air weapon systems, including for defense against drones and cruise missiles.
According to the National Defense Ministry, SHORAD-VSHORAD systems represent an optimal combination of mobility, efficiency and integration into modern defensive networks, being compatible with NATO requirements.
The purchase, for which the Parliament's prior approval was obtained, as per the specific legislation, was perfected in a restricted bidding procedure that stipulated as a requirement the international acquisition, with the obligation of integration with the national defense industry through technological and industrial cooperation.
Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd was designated the winning bidder.
