European Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Cretu on Wednesday approved the earmarking of 517 million euros for a major project "Building of Metro Line 6 (1 Mai-Tokyo)," included by the Romanian authorities in the Large Infrastructure Operational Programme (LIOP), reads a release of the European Executive.
The European co-financing is meant for the building of a 6-km segment of the Bucharest subway infrastructure, part of the 14-km Metro Line 6 (to connect Bucharest North Train Station with Henri Coanda International Airport, which is located in the district of Otopeni) in Bucharest. Line 6 will be linked to Line 4 (Bucharest North Station - Straulesti Lake).
Six new stations will be built between 1 Mai and the Baneasa shopping complex, where the Tokyo station will be established, and there will be bought 12 trains, 6 wagons each.
"This investment from the Cohesion Fund will improve the every day life of 1.8 million citizens, who will benefit from better transport connections to more destinations in Bucharest. I hope that the Romanian authorities will find solutions to complete the Metro Line 6 until 2023, as the project says, so that citizens will be able to use this metro line from 1 Mai to the Otopeni International Airport," stated European Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Cretu.
The constructions works at the 1 Mai - Tokyo Line are scheduled to start in the second half of this year.
In mid-September 2018, the Ministry of Transportations announced in a press release that the project for the Metro Line 6 (1 Mai - Otopeni) will benefit from funds from the European Commission, as they were still negotiating at that time on the maximum value of the non-reimbursable funds to be allotted through the Large Infrastructure Operational Programme.
"The European Commission announced the Ministry of Transportation that it will finance the project for the metro line to ensure the connection between the Henri Coanda International Airport and Otopeni (Metro Line 6, 1 Mai-Otopeni). Negotiations are ongoing regarding the maximum value of the non-reimbursable funds to be allotted through the Large Infrastructure Operational Programme. The final value depends on the discussions between the Romanian authorities, the European Commission and Japan's International Cooperation Agency," read a release sent to AGERPRES on September 13, 2018.
According to this source, the funds were requested to build a direct connection between the Bucharest City and Otopeni district, respectively between the Bucharest North Station and the Henri Coanda International Airport, through building a new metro line to measure 14.2 km and have 12 subway stations.
The total value of the project is 1,391,634,272 euro, with the co-financing to be ensured through a loan from the Japanese Bank for International Cooperation, and well from the state budget.
