The Supreme Court of Justice and Cassation (ICCJ) ruled that former Premier Victor Ponta further stays under court supervision, but lifted the interdiction to Ponta talking to the media about his case. He can also freely leave Romania. This is the conclusion of the court's hearing on Friday a legal challenge to the National Anti-Corruption Directorate's decision to place Ponta under court supervision.

Ponta is still under a ban to contact witnesses and other suspects in the case and must periodically report to the Police and the investigation bodies, whenever he is summoned.

Prosecutors of the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) - Ploiesti branch are investigating Victor Ponta in a case where he faces charges of misuse of power for illegal benefits for self or other, and complicity to money laundering. On Tuesday the prosecutors placed Ponta under 60-day court supervision.

Deputy Sebastian Ghita too is being prosecuted in the same case for complicity to money laundering.

The anti-corruption prosecutors argue that Ponta, in his capacity as leader of the Social Democratic Party, used his authority to get businessman Sebastian Ghita designated as candidate in the 2012 parliamentary election in a constituency where his winning chances were high. In exchange, Ghita allegedly paid 220,000 euros to arrange the visit of a foreign personality to Romania that was to boost Ponta's electoral capital in the context of the electoral year 2012, when local and parliamentary elections were scheduled. The 220,000 euros were obtained through intermediaries from the indicted businessman Sebastian Ghita, DNA said, cited by agerpres.
