The Bucharest Court of Appeal approved on Friday the request of the anti-corruption prosecutors for a 30-day pre-trial arrest of former Senator Marius Ovidiu Isaila, who faces charges of influence peddling after allegedly promising to intervene with Defense Minister Ionut Mosteanu in connection with the conclusion of contracts between a private company and the national company Romtehnica.

According to the prosecutors, the former lawmaker indirectly promised through a go-between 1 million euros for the Defense minister, agerpres reports.

Isaila was detained on Thursday for 24 hours and on Friday was brought before a judge at the Bucharest Court of Appeal. The magistrate ordered a 30-day arrest for the former senator.

The National Anti-corruption Directorate (DNA) issued a release regarding this case, which does not mention the name of the former senator, but judicial sources have specified to AGERPRES that it is Marius Ovidiu Isaila.

"The prosecutors with DNA's Section for the combat of corruption-related crimes ordered the initiation of criminal proceedings and a 24-hour detention, effective November 6, 2025, of defendant I.M.O. on charges of influence peddling. According to the prosecutors' order, the case file contains data and evidence substantiating the following factual circumstances: on October 9 and 15, 2025, the defendant allegedly conveyed - via an intermediary who now serves as a witness in the case - an offer of €1 million intended for the minister of National Defense. This offer was reportedly reiterated on October 24, 2025. The defendant is believed to have acted under the assumption that the minister could exert influence over the management of C.N. Romtehnica S.A., a state-owned enterprise having the Defense Ministry as sole shareholder, with the aim of facilitating the conclusion of commercial contracts between the said company and a private entity," the DNA reports.

The offense of influence peddling was allegedly committed in a context of post-execution recidivism, given that the defendant, former senator Marius Ovidiu Isaila, has previously served a custodial sentence for corruption-related crimes. In November 2019, Isaila was definitively convicted and sentenced to five years and four months in prison for influence buying and for instigating the forgery of documents under private signature.
