The exhibition 'Queen Marie - 150 Years Since Her Birth' will be open for visit at the Romanian Academy Library from October 8 to 24.
Admission will be free, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Romanian Academy said in a release.
Taking the floor at the opening event on Wednesday will be the President of the Romanian Academy, Acad. Ioan-Aurel Pop, the general director of the Romanian Academy Library, Prof. Eng. Nicolae Noica, and the general director of the Peles National Museum, Dr. Narcis Dorin Ion.
"The exhibition 'Queen Marie - 150 Years Since Her Birth' is an ambitious undertaking which aimed to exhaustively cover all the facets of an exceptional historical destiny: as a wife, young mother, Red Cross nurse and active coordinator of anti-cholera efforts, a patron of young Romanian artists, supporter of a national style drawing on a foundation of traditional continuity, a stepping stone for King Ferdinand the Loyal on the WWI battlefront, exponent of Romanian diplomacy through her visits to the United States of America or to the League of Nations, but also as a host for royal and imperial visitors, queen-mother and helper for her son Carol II," the release states.
Resources of the Academy Library's Cabinet of Prints and Cabinet of Manuscripts & Rare Books were used to illustrate the queen's life with photographs, graphic works, manuscripts and holographic letters put on display.
"For most of us, Queen Marie remains etched in our memory as the Red Cross nurse dedicated to the WWI wounded, and as the queen of a reunified Romania, surrounded by her children almost all of whom became monarchs in the Balkans: Carol - King of Romania, Elisabeth - Queen of Greece, Maria - Queen of Yugoslavia, Prince Nicolae, and Princess Ileana - future Archduchess of Austria and Princess of Habsburg," the release states.
Queen Marie's lesser-known side as an artistically inclined personality will also come in the limelight - as she was not only a supporter of young artists, but herself "a quite gifted creator", the cited source mentions.
"Dedicated to an intimate circle of family and friends, her illustrations, especially floral ones - a delicate nod to King Ferdinand's interest in botany - adorned the margins of her various manuscripts. The public will have the opportunity to admire a series of albums written and illustrated by Queen Marie. Accompanying these as a pendant to the watercolor flowers are the floral arrangements of designer Dana Turdean, a Sogetsu Ikebana accredited teacher," the Romanian Academy said.
