An exhibition dedicated to Romania's constitutional heritage and its role in shaping the modern state will open on Monday, 8 December, at the "Mihail Sadoveanu" central headquarters of the Bucharest Metropolitan Library (BMB), on the occasion of Romania's Constitution Day.

The exhibition presents to the public the original copy of the 1866 Constitution, alongside rare volumes, heritage documents and key works illustrating the modernisation of the Romanian state in the 19th and 20th centuries, according to a BMB release sent to AGERPRES on Friday.

The original copy on display, printed at the State Printing House in 1866, was acquired by the Bucharest Metropolitan Library in 2007 and represents one of the most valuable items in the institution's heritage collection.

"The Constitution Day offers us the opportunity to recall the fundamental role of culture and education in understanding national identity. The 1866 Constitution is not just an archival document, but a symbol of Romania's modernisation," the Bucharest Metropolitan Library Manager Ramona Ioana Mezei said, as quoted in the release.

Throughout the exhibition programme, between 9:00 and 16:00, the visitors will be able to watch the documentary film "A short history of Romania's Constitutions" which presents the development of the constitutional framework from 1866 to 1923. The documentary is produced by the Heritage, Conservation, Special Collections Service. The Digital Library of Bucharest. The Local Legal Deposit within the Bucharest Metropolitan Library.

In the spirit of Constitution Day, pupils, secondary school students and the general public are invited to visit the exhibition, discovering not only the original copy of the 1866 Constitution, but also other rare documents that contributed to the modernisation of the Romanian state.

The 1866 Constitution is regarded as Romania's first modern constitutional act, marking the transition to the hereditary constitutional monarchy, enshrining the liberal principles of the era and affirming national sovereignty. Inspired by the Belgian model of 1831, this fundamental text provided a lasting legal structure that influenced the development of the Romanian state up to the 1923 Constitution.
