Experts and diplomatic representatives discussed the global economy and strategic transformations in a new series of 3G debates - Globalisation, Geoeconomics, Geopolitics - organised by the National Institute for Economic Research (INCE) and the Institute of World Economy (IEM) of the Romanian Academy.
According to an IEM press release, the event saw high-level Australian participation, with Ambassador Alison Duncan attending the discussions alongside Professor Gordon Flake, Chief Executive Officer of the Perth USAsia Centre at the University of Western Australia and a leading expert on Indo-Pacific geopolitics and geoeconomics.
The debate also included online contributions from Romania's Ambassador to Australia, Radu Safta, and Eugen Dijmarescu, former Romanian Ambassador to Japan, both providing valuable perspectives on international economic relations and the development of Asia-Pacific markets.
"In his presentation, Professor Gordon Flake analysed Australia's favourable position in the global transition to green energy, highlighting the country's significant potential in renewable energy production and the exploitation of critical minerals, particularly rare earths - essential resources for modern technologies and the global battery and electric vehicle industry. Flake also emphasised an important economic paradox: although Australia has strategic natural resources and major opportunities in the green energy sector, its Economic Complexity Index (ECI) ranks around 90-95 globally, alongside much less industrially developed countries. This situation is explained by the country's heavy reliance on raw material exports, which exposes it to international market volatility and structural risks that limit diversification and economic resilience," reads the press release.
According to the cited source, the debate also provided a solid platform for exchanging ideas and perspectives on global economic developments, the reconfiguration of supply chains, geoeconomic competition, and the potential for cooperation between Romania and Australia in strategic areas.
"The 3G series remains one of IEM's major initiatives, consistently contributing to the promotion of academic dialogue and to the understanding of global trends that shape contemporary economics and geopolitics," the release further highlights.
