Pupils from the Robotics Club of the "Unirea" National College in Targu Mures gave a demonstration on Wednesday evening to Her Majesty Margareta, Custodian of the Romanian Crown, and His Royal Highness Prince Radu, showcasing one of the robots they have designed and programmed, named FOCA, which is capable of performing a series of complex actions.
"We presented last year's project, as this season has only just started, just two weeks in, and so we didn't have a fully functional robot ready yet. It will be ready only in December. We explained what the robot does, briefly outlined how points are earned, and we wanted to highlight the complexity of the project. The children are organised into departments - public relations, marketing, promotion - and they are encouraged to, and gladly do, participate in volunteer work. Additionally, they are involved in activities run by Save the Children, they are engaged and keen to collaborate and to become known among children in difficulty, on the one hand, and on the other, they reach out to their peers and younger pupils, trying to draw them towards studying exact sciences," informatics teacher Manuela Marginean told AGERPRES.
The teacher mentioned that many of the Robotics Club members are national Olympiad winners in various subjects.
"We work with children who are eager to learn, who would get involved in everything if only they had enough time. For example, the boy in charge of the hardware department, Andrei, is also part of the eTwinning club and the Erasmus projects group. They are wonderful, and we are very glad they are so open and keen to work," added Manuela Marginean.
Headteacher of "Unirea" National College Aurora Manuela Stanescu gave a brief presentation of this elite school's achievements, with 843 pupils, 256 of whom have qualified for national Olympiads between 2006 and 2024. She also highlighted the pupils' and teachers' publications, as well as the six Erasmus+ projects in which the school has participated or coordinated.
Her Majesty Margareta and His Royal Highness Prince Radu also attended demonstrations from the eTwinning, Erasmus projects, debate, natural sciences and biochemistry clubs at "Unirea" National College.
The high school pupils also presented the Royal Family a prototype project for testing honey, with which they competed last year in the national stage of the Scientific Creativity Olympiad.
