Romanian tennis players Filip Cristian Jianu and Luca Preda qualified on Tuesday for the round of 16 at the Concord Iasi Open (Challenger), an event with total prize money of EUR 145,250.
Jianu (aged 23, ATP No. 274) advanced after Frenchman Calvin Hemery (aged 30, ATP No. 178) retired at 5-1 after just 29 minutes.
The two had previously met last year in Bonn (Germany), where the Frenchman won in the round of 16, 6-4, 6-7 (4/7), 6-3.
In the second round, Jianu will face Italian Francesco Maestrelli (aged 22, ATP No. 237), who won the Brasov Challenger on Sunday.
Luca Preda (aged 19, ATP No. 861) defeated Germany's Marko Topo (aged 21, ATP No. 276) 6-2, 0-6, 6-4, in a match that lasted two hours and three minutes. Topo committed nine double faults during the encounter.
Preda will play in the second round against Croatian Duje Ajdukovic (aged 24, ATP No. 183), the tournament's eighth seed.
Both Romanian players secured EUR 2,450 and 7 ATP points.
In another match, Sebastian Gima (aged 23, ATP No. 658), who came through qualifying, was defeated by Bolivia's Murkel Dellien (aged 27, ATP No. 223), 7-6 (7/3), 6-3, after two hours and 25 minutes.
