The maintenance of the ceiling on compulsory motor third party liability insurance (MTPL) tariffs will be decided on the basis of an analysis to be carried out by the Financial Supervisory Authority (ASF), Finance Minister Marcel Bolos said on Monday, attending a conference.

"We are waiting for an analysis to be made by the Financial Supervisory Authority, as it is responsible for monitoring the insurance market and, based on this analysis, we will take the most appropriate decision, to protect both policyholders and not to cause disturbances in the mechanism of functioning of the insurance market...," said Marcel Bolos.

Asked if he knew what the ASF's proposal was, he mentioned that he would not want to prejudge it "because a prejudgement in this area is very sensitive, given that we are talking about more than 8 million policyholders and here we must have a balance between what the insurance premiums paid by policyholders and the amount of the claims."

According to the Finance minister, in the last decade of June the ASF analyses are expected to be done and a decision made.

The last cap on MTPL rates was decided at the end of March. Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu announced then that the Government is extending by three months, until 30 June, the cap on MTPL rates.
