Romania's Ruse reaches Linz Open singles R16

Romanian tennis player Gabriela Ruse on Monday progressed to the round of 16 of the women's singles event at the Linz Open WTA 500 tournament in Austria, prize money EUR 1,049,083, after defeating Katie Boulter 7-6 (7/3) 7-6 (7/2).

Ruse, 28, ranked 87th, prevailed over the 29-year-oldb Boulter, ranked 62nd , in two hours and 10 minutes.

In the first set, the Romanian was 3-1 and 4-2, but she was tied and managed to win the tiebreak. The second set was more balanced, with none of the players failing to break away, but Ruse had a match point at 6-5, before winning the tiebreak again.

Ruse finished with six aces and four double faults, while Boulter had five aces and six double faults, each landing four breaks.

Ruse secured won EUR 15,690 and 60 WTA singles points. In the second round, she will play the winner between the American Ann Li, seventh seed, and Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska.

Compatriot Sorana Cirstea, fifth seed, will play in the first Austrian Sinja Kraus, while Jaqueline Cristian, sixth seed, will face off qualifier Tamara Korpatsch of Germany.
