Tax evasion is not only a crime, but direct theft from the citizen's pockets, and by using digital tools, advanced risk analysis and, above all, through willpower, we will also succeed in cleaning the market of unfair players, says Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare.
"By using digital tools, advanced risk analysis and, above all, through willpower, we will succeed in cleaning the market of unfair players. Tax evasion is not just a crime, but direct theft from the citizen's pocket. That is why it is also the number one objective of the National Tax Administration Agency (ANAF) and the only way towards a fair state that truly respects its citizens," the minister wrote in a social media post on Tuesday.
His reaction comes after the Fiscal Anti-Fraud Directorate General (DGAF) discovered damage of over RON 29 million in value added tax (VAT) fraud at a business operator specialising in used car trade.
The audited company illegally and abusively applied the special margin regime for all sales of cars made to individuals and legal entities in Romania and other states. Those cars had not been purchased on a margin basis, as required by law.
According to ANAF, by applying an artificial margin of approximately EUR 100 (including VAT) for each car, the company significantly reduced the VAT declared and paid to the state budget.
"Today, a new fraud scheme has come to light. Anti-fraud ANAF and the National Anticorruption Directorate DNA uncovered fraud of RON 29 million in the trade of used cars, through repeated defrauding. The company involved abused the special margin benefit, declaring fictitious values and thus avoiding the payment of due taxes. Moreover, the network was not a first-time offender: through several companies set up successively, they sustained debts, then applied for insolvency in order to evade payment. The ANAF checks continue in two counties, in collaboration with the DNA, as local anti-fraud directorates simultaneously monitor the intra-community transport of cars at the western border of the country," said Nazare.
