The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) says that it has informed the allied states about attempts of external interference in the electoral campaign in Romania and assures that the country will take action in this context.

"The Romanian authorities are investigating this ongoing influence attempt. We have informed our allies about this external interference attempt and will take all necessary measures to protect democracy, national security, and sovereignty," reads a MAE press release sent to AGERPRES on Thursday.

The Romanian Ministry points out that Romania remains firmly committed to protecting its democratic institutions and processes against "unprecedented foreign interference and manipulation."

Thus, the MAE explains, the Romanian authorities decided to declassify and make public reports that contain "relevant information regarding malignant external operations, including illegal funding, synthetic amplification of digital campaigns, and large-scale cyberattacks targeting the presidential elections in Romania."

The declassified reports, the ministry stresses, show "unprecedented and significant foreign interference directed against democratic institutions and processes."

These actions are part of an ongoing and persistent attempt to undermine Romania's firm commitment to Euro-Atlantic values and our membership in the EU and NATO, says the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The information presented by the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI), the Foreign Intelligence Service (SIE), and the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) during the meeting of the Supreme Council for National Defence (CSAT) on November 28, which were declassified on Wednesday by President Klaus Iohannis, indicate that the funding of independent candidate Calin Georgescu's campaign on TikTok amounted to one million euro, that there were actions by a state-sponsored cyber actor targeting IT&C infrastructures supporting the electoral process, and that Romania is a target for aggressive Russian hybrid actions.
