The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) informs that in the case of Thursday's incidents in Leeds (Great Britain), in which Romanian citizens were involved, there is an ongoing investigation, and, in this context, the interest of the minors involved is a priority.
According to the representatives of the local police authorities, the investigation into this incident is ongoing, so at this moment there have been no notifications regarding the detention or arrest of Romanian citizens involved in Thursday's events.
According to the MAE, the consul general of Romania in Manchester had a series of meetings with the representatives of the local authorities in Leeds involved in the management of the situation which was based on the action of taking over four minor Romanian citizens into the care of the local social services.
During the dialogue, the representatives of the local police authorities appreciated the steps taken by the Consulate General of Romania in Manchester in support of the normalization of the situation, respectively the discussions with the families of Romanian citizens and with the representatives of the religious denominations to which the Romanian citizens present on the spot belong. During the discussions, the need to comply with the recommendations of the local authorities, following the legal paths of action and the importance of complying with the decisions of the authorities for the protection of minors in Leeds was emphasized, the cited source informs.
Also, in the context of the discussions with the representatives of the British social services within the Leeds Local Council that manages the case of the minor Romanian citizens, as well as with the family of Romanian citizens, the representatives of the Consulate General in Manchester assured them of the support of the Romanian authorities in identifying a lasting solution, in the best interest of the minors, in compliance with the decisions adopted by the British authorities responsible for the case.
The representatives of the Romanian mission emphasized the importance of openness and the cooperation of the minors' family with the competent authorities in order to identify all the instruments intended to facilitate a solution in the best interests of the minors.
The Romanian Ministry underlines that, according to its competences, in all the consular protection and assistance actions carried out for Romanian citizens, the MAE, through the diplomatic missions and consular offices of Romania, and in some situations with the support of the attachés for social and labor issues, pays attention especially to Romanian minors who could find themselves in difficult situations abroad.
The dialogue is also maintained with the parents of minors, with the competent local authorities, as well as with the Romanian institutions with attributions in matters of protection of the rights of minors.
The MAE points out that in all the steps carried out in the case of minor Romanian citizens in special situations, the fundamental principle of respecting the best interests of the child is primordial, in full accordance with the principles enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child, with respect to the regulations of the state of citizenship or permanent residence or domicile of the minor.
Several Romanians were involved, on Thursday evening, in Leeds, in violent incidents, which seem to have been triggered by the attempt to take over some children into the care of the state.
