The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) welcomes the adoption by the UN General Assembly, convened in a special emergency session, of the resolution entitled "Humanitarian Consequences of Aggression Against Ukraine", with a large majority of 140 UN members.

Romania, together with 88 member states, co-sponsored the resolution initiated by France and Mexico. Five UN member states voted against the resolution.

The support for the document reaffirms the historic support the first resolution on the situation in Ukraine caused by the invasion and aggression of the Russian Federation against the country received on March 2, 2022, adopted by the UN General Assembly in the first part of the 11th emergency session, a document entitled "Aggression against Ukraine", said a MAE release sent to AGERPRES on Thursday.

"The resolution of March 24 reaffirms its support for the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine, within its internationally recognized borders, and emphasizes the need for full implementation of the General Assembly Resolution of March 2, 2022. The great majority of UN member states call for immediate cease of the hostilities, condemn the violations of the international humanitarian law and demand the full observance of its provisions, the document encouraging the resolution of the conflict by peaceful means ", the MAE informed.

The document also expresses deep concern about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Ukraine, especially with regard to the high number of civilian casualties, including children, as well as the situation of displaced persons or refugees in need of humanitarian assistance, the quoted source added.

The resolution also contains strong messages about the global repercussions of Russia's aggression, especially on the impact of the conflict on growing food and energy insecurity. At the same time, the need to ensure the protection of civilians, without discrimination, of humanitarian and medical personnel, as well as of the objectives and infrastructure indispensable for the survival of the civilian population, is underlined.

"In response to Russia's threats about the use of nuclear weapons, as well as armed actions against Ukrainian nuclear power plants, the Resolution expresses concern about the serious humanitarian and environmental consequences of accidents that could result from the bombing of Ukrainian nuclear infrastructure. Thus, the document underlines the obligation to guarantee the safety and security of the entire nuclear infrastructure", the MAE release mentioned.
