Former Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos announced he spent a few days in Washington, his schedule also including an informal meeting at the US Department of State, after "the alarm signal" which the US officials sent in regards to the amendments to the Justice Laws.
"I spent a few days in Washington for professional activities and I had the pleasure to be on the National Day alongside members of the Romanian community in the US, at the reception organised by Romania's Embassy. I took this opportunity to also meet supporters of Romania 100 Platform, and then I had an informal meeting at the Department of State (after the alarm signal the US officials sent about the modifications to the Justice Laws)," Ciolos wrote on Facebook on Sunday.
On November 27, US Department of State Spokesperson Heather Nauert said in a press statement called "Romania: Proposals Affecting the Independence of the Judiciary" that "The United States notes with concern that the Parliament of Romania is considering legislation that could undermine the fight against corruption and weaken judicial independence in Romania."
"This legislation, which was originally proposed by the Ministry of Justice, threatens the progress Romania has made in recent years to build strong judicial institutions shielded from political interference," the spokesperson pointed out in the statement released on the US Department of State website.
The US "urge the Parliament of Romania to reject proposals that weaken the rule of law and endanger the fight against corruption," the spokesperson added. AGERPRES .
