Foreign Affairs Minister Teodor Melescanu met on Monday with his Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj, occasion on which he encouraged Indian companies to participate in projects approved by the Romanian Government to be implemented under the public-private partnership regime.

According to a release of the Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE), the two ministers reviewed the stage of the bilateral relations, emphasising on the upward trend of the political-diplomatic dialogue, the very good cooperation within international forums, as well as the visible tendency to revive bilateral trade.

Teodor Melescanu underscored Romania's interest in strengthening the Extended Partnership with the Republic of India (concluded on 8 March 2013) through boosting cooperation on multiple levels: trade and investments, air and maritime transport, defence and defence industry, education, culture, healthcare. "He encouraged the participation of India's companies in projects approved by the Romanian Government to be implemented under the public-private partnership regime. He highlighted the importance of increasing the level of political consultations and continuing dialogue on topics related to trade and investments through contacts at the relevant ministers' level," the MAE release mentions.

Moreover, Melescanu presented the main objectives of the future Romanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union and expressed the availability to promote, during Romania's tenure, the deepening of the EU-India cooperation.

The schedule of the Romanian Foreign Affairs Minister's visit also included a meeting with India's Deputy National Security Advisor Pankaj Saran, during which aspects related to the international and regional developments were tackled.

The head of the Romanian diplomacy delivered a speech within a conference organised at the Observer Research Foundation, one of the most important think-thanks of India, regarding Romania's agenda on the connectivity between Europe and Asia.

The visit to India of the Foreign Affairs Minister took place in the context of marking, in 2018, 70 years since the establishment of the diplomatic ties with India (on 14 December 1948) and five years since the conclusion of the Extended Partnership between Romania and the Republic of India. The MAE brings to mind that between 18-20 September, Vice President of India Venkaiah M. Naidu paid a visit to Romania.
