Minister of Foreign Affairs Oana Toiu on Saturday had a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, on the occasion of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, with the two having had an exchange of views on regional developments, including the situation in Ukraine.
'The meeting reconfirmed, as a central perspective, the shared commitment to effective multilateralism and to strengthening the role of the UN in addressing global crises. The discussions highlighted shared concerns in the face of current global challenges, as well as the need for coordinated action within the UN. The UN Secretary-General and the Minister of Foreign Affairs exchanged views on regional developments, including the situation in Ukraine,' reads a press release Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) issued on Sunday.
The dialogue also addressed global initiatives led by the UN in the area of regulating and safely using artificial intelligence, as well as the Pact for the Future, the same source pointed out.
According to the press release, the Romanian minister reconfirmed Romania's support for the Secretary-General's proposals on reforming the organisation, so that it can respond appropriately and effectively to current and future challenges.
'She underscored the active role that Romania is prepared to play in all areas of the UN's work, expressing full openness to cooperation throughout the entire session. In turn, the UN Secretary-General welcomed Romania's consistent involvement in promoting the fundamental values of the UN. He noted our country's contributions in supporting a rules-based international order, in strengthening regional security, as well as in defending human rights and democratic principles,' the release also reads.
