France plays a key role in the defense of NATO's eastern flank, including by leading the Battle Group deployed to Romania, President Nicusor Dan declared on Monday at the reception organized in honor of the National Day of the French Republic.

He brought to mind that in 2025 Romania and France celebrate 145 years of uninterrupted diplomatic relations, stressing that "this is an opportunity for reflection and appreciation for a deeply rooted friendship, reinforced by common values and profound cultural affinities. From the support provided for Romania's modernization process in the 19th century to the solidarity shown in the turning points of December 1989 or the firm support of our EU and NATO accession, France has always been a close friend and partner of Romania."

According to the president, the relationship between Romania and France is today based on "a solid and comprehensive strategic partnership" that encompasses shared values - strengthening the European project, democracy, defending the rule of law, security and prosperity for the citizens and protecting the rules-based international order.

Nicusor Dan also mentioned the Romanian community in France. "There are hundreds of thousands of Romanians who make a significant contribution to the social, economic and cultural life of France. Through their integration, through their dedicated work and through the creation of interpersonal contacts, the Romanians living in France constitute a true bond between the two nations," he stated.

He went on to note that Romania remains not only a Francophone, but also a Francophile country by nature.

"The Francophonie is a vital part of our external identity and a living, lasting link between generations. The cultural and educational exchanges between Romania and France are an eloquent example of this deep connection," he pointed out.

Nicusor Dan underscored that France is a major investor and trade partner of Romania's, and also highlighted the "excellent political dialogue" between Romania and France, as well as their close coordination within the European Union and NATO.

"We have coinciding visions: a Europe more united, more resilient and more open towards the citizens. Romania and France will continue to work together to promote peace, democracy, security and sustainable development," the Romanian president concluded.
