The Romanian tennis player Gabi Adrian Boitan qualified on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the challenger tournament in Tampere (Finland), with total prizes of 74,825 euros, after defeating the Kazakh Dmitri Popko in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Boitan (25 years old, no. 374 ATP), coming from the qualifiers, won after one hour and 48 minutes, despite the 11 aces achieved by Popko (27 years old, no. 187 ATP), the third seed.
Popko won both previous encounters with Boian this year in Palm Coast, Florida (ITF), in the semifinals 6-2, 6-0, and in the quarterfinals in Naples, 7-5, 7-6 (7 /4).
Gabi Boitan secured a cheque for 2,070 euros and 16 ATP points, and in the quarterfinals he will play against the Tunisian Aziz Dougaz (27 years old, no. 234 ATP), who won the only direct match, in 2018, in Tunis, 6- 4, 6-2, in the second round.
