Director of the Transylvania International Book Festival (FICT), writer Gabriel Bota, told the opening of the event on Wednesday that Romania cannot have a future without culture.

"I'm glad that this edition happens too, because I won't be very optimistic. You know what is happening around us and it seems to me that it is increasingly difficult to talk about culture in Romania in the years 2025 and, especially, about written culture. I am very glad that we managed, together with my colleagues, to organise this edition as well, to bring the important publishing houses to Romania, to bring writers, valuable people for Romanian culture to FICT 2025. (...) I think our message 'Building the future through culture' must be really understood because, at the moment, we have no future and there is no future without culture. At our base as a society lies the book, nothing else can stand. We build lives, we build love, hospitals, roads, cities through culture. Everyone should understand and realise that, if we take our hands off culture and especially books, we cannot have a future," said Bota.

FICT takes place between September 24-28, in Unirii Square in Cluj-Napoca.

For five days, there will be 63 cultural events and over 70 book launches; 12 conferences and debates in the FICT Meetings series, exploring topics such as the state of today's prose, education and culture, the relationship between literature and journalism, literature and politics, sports, psychology and digital communication. In total, there will be 170 speakers, and over 40 publishing houses are waiting for readers with countless books from all fields.

"FICT 11 means, first of all, the most events that have ever taken place in the history of FICT editions, 63 in number, the most conferences and debates produced by us, 12 , and a lot of diversity. A message with which we started this year - 'we build the future through culture'. Why are we building it?! Because we need culture to have a future. It's extremely simple. We return to books to remember that at the base of any construction in society there must be culture, there must be books. This is FICT 11," Bota told AGERPRES.
